Heal From Trauma & Move Forward With Confidence

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a powerful, evidence-based approach to treating trauma and distressing life experiences. At New England Therapy Alliance, EMDR therapy helps clients process painful memories, reduce emotional distress, and build lasting resilience, without having to relive the trauma in detail.

If past experiences are still impacting your thoughts, emotions, or relationships, EMDR therapy may help you finally feel relief and find peace in your life again.

What is EMDR Therapy?

How Does EMDR Therapy Work?

EMDR therapy is a structured, research-supported form of psychotherapy designed to help the brain reprocess traumatic or overwhelming experiences. Traumatic memories can become “stuck,” continuing to trigger anxiety, fear, shame, or emotional numbness long after the event has passed.

During EMDR therapy, bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, tapping, or tones) is used to help the brain reprocess these memories so they become less emotionally charged and no longer interfere with daily life.

EMDR is recognized by organizations such as the American Psychological Association (APA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase protocol that prioritizes safety, stability, and collaboration.

  • We identify your goals and determine whether EMDR is a good fit.

  • You’ll learn grounding and coping skills to feel safe and supported.

  • We identify the memories, beliefs, and emotions to target.

  • Bilateral stimulation helps the brain process and integrate the memory.

  • Positive beliefs are strengthened and reinforced.

  • We check for remaining physical tension or distress.

  • Each session ends with stabilization and grounding.

  • Progress is reviewed and future targets are identified.

WHAT EMDR CAN HELP WITH:

  1. Trauma + Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  2. Childhood abuse or neglect

  3. Anxiety and panic attacks

  4. Depression linked to past experiences

  5. Grief and loss

  6. Attachment wounds and relationship trauma

  7. Medical trauma or accidents

  8. Performance anxiety and phobias

  9. Low self-esteem and negative core beliefs

DO I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT MY TRAUMA IN DETAIL?

No. One of the unique benefits of EMDR therapy is that you do not need to describe every detail of your traumatic experiences.

EMDR allows your brain to do the healing work internally, which can feel less overwhelming and more empowering.

You do not need to have experienced a single, major traumatic event for EMDR therapy to be helpful. Many clients benefit from EMDR when addressing chronic stress, emotional wounds, or patterns that no longer serve them.
